Do not seek the short path, but the meaningful one

Develop your soft skills – they are your hidden asset. Build a personal style and reputation that speaks for you. And never forget – the most valuable investment is the one in yourself!

Introduce yourself in a few words..

My name is Mariela Balcheva and I am the commercial director at DoubleTree by Hilton Plovdiv Center. I have been part of the hospitality industry and the Hilton family for over 20 years and I am happy to say that I work in a company and team that share my values and aspirations for development, quality and authenticity.

Tell us about the philosophy and values of the company you currently work for?

The philosophy of Hilton is built around the idea of “positive hospitality” – to create experiences that stay in the guest's heart. Our core values are care, respect, collaboration, integrity, and a pursuit of excellence. The attitude towards the customer starts with the attitude towards the employee – this is the core of our corporate culture.

How long have you been working at the current company? What are the main motivating factors that keep you there?

I have been working for the Hilton chain for over 23 years and for more than two years I have been part of DoubleTree by Hilton Plovdiv Center. What motivates me daily is the opportunity to build something meaningful in the heart of the city – a hotel with high standards, combining international experience and local spirit. I am also inspired by the team – young, ambitious professionals with whom we work with ease and passion.

If you had to recommend the company to your acquaintances or friends, what would you share with them to attract their attention?

I would tell them that this is a place where you can express yourself, learn from the best, and be part of a global chain without losing the human touch. At Hilton we believe that success is achieved together – in a team, in trust, and in an atmosphere where you feel significant.

What does your company do to organize a constructive and beneficial working environment for everyone? Should we be friends with our colleagues?

We place great focus on internal communication, training, and feedback culture. We organize team buildings, internal events, and regular meetings that encourage open dialogue. It is not necessary to be close friends with your colleagues, but it is important to respect each other, help each other, and be part of a common effort.

Tell us a little more about your responsibilities in the company. What makes you enjoy going to work? How do you handle difficult and stressful moments?

I am responsible for the commercial strategy of the hotel, for brand positioning, revenue management, corporate clients, and marketing activities. Every day is different – meetings, ideas, decisions, energy. I like the dynamics and the feeling that my work has a direct impact on the success of the hotel. In difficult moments, I rely on the team – together we find solutions, learn, and move forward.

What work model does your company adhere to – office or remote? What are the advantages in your specific case and position?

We mainly work from the office because our work is closely related to the property, the people, and the guests. In my role, it is important to be close to the team and clients, to feel the pulse of the business in real time. This allows me to respond flexibly and be in sync with all processes.

What have you been able to seriously enhance in your work over time in this company?

I have been able to enhance my strategic thinking, the ability to manage complex projects, and to build strong partnerships. I have also deepened my knowledge regarding digital marketing and modern channels for communication with clients – something increasingly crucial in our industry.

How important is hierarchy and what does it mean to you?

Hierarchy is important as a structure, but it should not be an obstacle to communication and ideas. For me, leadership is a responsibility, not a privilege – that is why I believe in open communication, accessibility, and in serving by example, regardless of position.

What is your career advice for all people who are building a strategy for their professional development?

Be patient and persistent. Do not seek the short path, but the meaningful one. Develop your soft skills – they are your hidden asset. Build a personal style and reputation that speaks for you. And never forget – the most valuable investment is the one in yourself.
