Expertise opens doors, while personality leads to connections

The personal brand is what people remember you by!
Introduce yourself in a few words..
My name is Milena Hristova – founder of ImpacT Hire, a career consultant by profession and a curious person by nature. I believe that selection is not just working with people, but working for the people. I love those moments when intuition meets experience – and the right match happens.
If I had to describe myself in one thought:
I always seek value between the lines – in conversations, in decisions, and in the direction,
where it is worth going.
How would you define a personal brand and why is it so important today?
A personal brand is not what you say about yourself, but what people remember you by. It is a combination of how you communicate, act, and stand behind your words, especially when no one is watching.
Today, in a world of information and opportunities, a personal brand is your business card and message. It creates trust, attracts the right people, and opens doors that would otherwise be closed.
In my world of selection and people,
the personal brand often makes the difference between "just another candidate" and
"the right person". That’s why I believe that at its core, it is awareness. It is not
noise, but clarity about who you are, what you believe in, and how you add value – with your presence,
and not just with your words. And that’s why it is so important to build it
consciously. While we work in a given company, we are often part of its brand.
But when we decide to move on, our personal brand is what stays with
us. If we have built it consciously, we will have an advantage and recognition. If we have
neglected it, we will have to start almost from scratch.
How did you start building your personal brand? What motivates you?
I started building my personal brand not as a strategy, but as a necessity. In an industry like ours – dynamic, competitive, and sometimes lacking authenticity, the feeling of being recognizable through the value you bring is important not only for success but for meaning.
At first, I was driven by the need to
distinguish myself from the model of “quick selection – quick profit”. I wanted to show that
selection can be personal, meaningful, and a long-term process. Gradually, I realized,
that I am not just building a brand, but building trust.
My motivation also comes from another – to
show that you can be authentic, professional, and human at the same time. That
your voice has value, even when you don’t speak. And that when you work with
content and value, you don’t need to market yourself – people start to find you
and choose you in the crowd of competition.
What are the most important elements of a successful personal brand?
A successful personal brand is not built only with good visions and strong words – it is felt. Here are the elements that I believe are key:
Ø
Authenticity:
Being true to yourself. People feel when you stand behind your words and when you are “forthe learned image“. The strongest brand is the one
that does not try to be everything for everyone, but remains consistent and honest.
Ø
Value:
A personal brand makes sense when it gives. When you not only show yourself, but
help others think, grow, or find solutions. Value is what makes you
irreplaceable.
Ø
Consistency:
A brand is not built with one good post or one interview. It requires persistence,
patience, and clarity about what you want to express – in every contact.
Ø
Behavioral culture: What you do when you are not in the spotlight – how you communicate,
how you react to feedback, how you act under pressure. There, the personal brand
either strengthens or collapses.
For
me, a good personal brand is not built to impress, but to connect. And when it is created
with meaning, you don’t need to advertise it strongly – it starts to speak for
you.
How to find your niche and unique value?
In my case... it found me. Or more precisely – I met it while testing, making mistakes, observing, and trying to understand not just “what works”, but what resonates with me.
I don’t believe that the niche is chosen at
once. It is built gradually with many experiments, with honest self-reflection,
and with the refusal to copy others' formulas. I also had the courage to try different
styles of work, approaches, communication – until I discovered the one that not only
brings results but also brings me satisfaction.
Sometimes the answer does not come with a bang. Sometimes
it appears quietly when you stop comparing yourself and start listening.
Should the personal brand be built around personality or expertise?
For me, there is no real division between the two – a sustainable personal brand is built precisely at the intersection of personality and expertise. Expertise itself is stronger when it comes from a person who knows who they are, what they value, and how to communicate that to the world.
Your expertise can open
doors, but your personality is what makes people want to stay in touch
with you.
In today’s environment, where knowledge is
constantly updated, and competition is huge, it is important not only what you know, but
how you convey it, what message you carry, and what feeling you leave behind.
In short: your expertise grabs
attention, while your personality earns trust. And to build an authentic brand, both
are needed.
What first steps would you recommend to someone who is just starting?
First – start with yourself, not with algorithms, not with templates. Ask yourself: What do I believe in? What do I want to express? What can I give to others in my own way?
Then – be brave to
start, even if it’s not “perfect”. A personal brand is built in motion, not
in waiting. Share thoughts, examples, lessons, even uncertainties – people connect with real stories, not with the ideal image.
Listen to feedback, but don’t
lose yourself in it. Test, adapt, grow, but don’t become what is sought, but what has value for both others and for you.
And last but not least – build
the habit of being present, not just publishing. A brand is not just what you say,
but how you participate, how you support, how you engage in conversations with other people and
brands. Time and
consistency will do the rest.
What platforms are most suitable for developing a personal brand today?
There is no universal recipe – it all depends on the target group, the nature of the business, and the way we want to be perceived. If we are talking about a B2B environment and professional positioning, LinkedIn is the absolute foundation. However, a personal brand is not just a business card – it is also a voice, style, emotion. That’s why platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and even TikTok have their role – especially when we want to show the human side of the brand, creativity or behind-the-scenes moments.
My advice is: don’t limit yourself to
one platform, especially if you have something to say in different ways to
different audiences. The better you know yourself and your audience, the more
naturally you will choose the right channel – not by trend, but by meaning.
But the most important thing is not where, but how
you are present, and the platforms simply amplify what you already are.
Sometimes companies (and people)
believe that with more noise they will automatically gain a reputation. But if an environment
still has much to learn and give within itself, publicity will only amplify
its internal contradictions. The working formula for me is first
content, and then sound.
What role does authenticity play in the personal brand and how to maintain it?
Authenticity is the backbone of the personal brand. Without it, everything looks good on the surface, but does not touch, does not stay, does not create a connection. People do not connect with the ideal version of us – they connect with the human, the vulnerable, the real.
Being authentic means allowing yourself to be
both an expert and a person. Not chasing perfection, but meaning. Speaking as you think. Showing both successes and lessons along the way.
It is maintained with honesty – to yourself
and to others. With the acceptance that you cannot be for everyone, but you will be
the right one for the right people.
In a world full of filters,
authenticity is the strongest magnet because it is rare. And when it is real, it is felt immediately.
How to create content that engages and builds trust?
First and foremost, by being honest. People feel when content is written to impress, and when it is shared, to be useful. As I have already shared, trust is built not only through expertise, but through a sincere tone, consistency, and a human voice.
Engaging content is that which provokes – thought, emotion, reflection. It does not need to be long or
perfect. It needs to be meaningful.
Talk about real things – those you
encounter every day. Share not only the results but also the process. Don’t
be afraid to show your point of view, even when it’s different, and don’t
forget: content is a conversation, not a monologue. Ask, answer,
listen. That’s how trust is built – word by word.
What are the most common mistakes people make when building a personal brand?
One of the most common mistakes is the attempt to be everything to everyone. A personal brand is not built with the thought “to be liked by everyone,” but with the clarity “what is important to me and to the people I want to connect with.”
Another common mistake is the lack
of consistency – in the way of communication, in the messages, in the commitment to
the value you provide. Trust is built with time and persistence, not with a single
strong post.
Many people focus on how they look – they
create a perfect external image but neglect the content and
meaning behind it. A sustainable brand starts from internal values, not from
external presentation.
And perhaps the biggest mistake –
the attempt to build an image that is not in sync with who we are. Such a brand is
hard to maintain and easy to recognize as insincere.
How to deal with negative comments and criticism?
First, I pause for a moment and make an assessment. Not every criticism is harmful, and not every opinion is true. For me, the golden rule is: listen, but don’t take everything as truth. Ask yourself: “Is there something in what I hear that I can use for growth?” If yes, that’s great. If not – you move on.
Negative comments often say
more about the person on the other side than about you. But your reaction says everything about
you. That’s why I strive not to enter an explanatory mode, but to understand. Sometimes
stepping back is not a weakness, but a sign of exceptional strength.
It’s important to have your own inner
compass. A personal brand is not a mission to be liked by everyone, but to be understood
by the right people.
How to avoid burnout (burnout), when investing a lot of effort in your personal brand?
For me, the key is not to turn the personal brand into a personal battle. The brand is a voice, a direction, a value, but it should not be a burden we carry with clenched teeth. Sometimes in our desire to be consistent, valuable, we start working hard for our name, but forget about the person behind the name.
And a truly sustainable personal brand
is not built with exhaustion, but with inner clarity and a deep connection with oneself.
The most authentic presence comes from a place of calm, not from constant
competition.
Rest can be a strategic pause - the moment when
you gather yourself, find new inspiration and a new reason. Sometimes it’s in the silence
that the strongest messages come.
Move at your own pace, not
at the pace of others, and remember that value is not in the number of posts, but in what
you have given. A personal brand is not a competition – it is a reflection. And when you are well
inside, you reflect light, not tension.
How can a strong personal brand lead to more opportunities (jobs, partnerships, clients)?
A strong personal brand is like a magnet – when it is sincere, clear, and consistent, it starts attracting the right people and opportunities without having to fight for them.
People want to work with people
they like and can trust. And trust is not built with
one meeting – it comes from how you think, how you communicate, what you radiate.
That’s what makes the personal brand so valuable – it opens doors for you even before
you knock.
Partnerships, new roles, clients –
all of them come more easily when you have left a mark with your ideas, not just with
a business card. The personal brand creates a reputation, and reputation is the currency of
the modern business world.
What are the best ways to monetize a personal brand?
Monetization is a natural continuation of the value you have already created. If you have built trust, shared knowledge, inspired or helped – people will want to work with you, to learn from you, or to recommend you.
The strongest ways to monetize
come from knowing yourself well, your audience, and the intersection
between the needs of the audience and your expertise. This can be:
Ø
Consulting
and services – direct sale of knowledge and time.
Ø
Products
or training – if you can “package” your experience into something that adds value and
can be shared.
Ø
Guest appearances,
partnerships, lectures – when your personal brand creates authority, it becomes
an invitation to the stageto
newopportunities and.
Ø
Creating
your own platform, community or
business – because when people believe in you, they are ready to follow what you
create.
However, for me, the personal brand is not a tool for quick
profit. It is an investment – in trust, in sustainability, in direction. When we
look at it this way, monetization comes as a consequence, not as an end goal.
When is the right time to start offering paid services or products?
When people start coming to you with questions, needs, and cases for which you know you can help. And most importantly – when you are ready to stand behind what you offer, with confidence and integrity.
The right moment is not after
a certain number of followers or publications. It comes when you have enough
experience to know what you can solve, and enough clarity about how to do it.
If you feel that you are starting to refuse
help because you can't take on more “for free” – then it is time. When you
start to respect your work as value, others will do the same.
Paid services are not a refusal of generosity. They
are a natural continuation of the efforts made. The transition from
“giving” to “offering” should come with attention
to quality – and with the same signature.
How to maintain sustainability and long-term growth of the personal brand?
With courage, patience, and humility. A sustainable personal brand is not built with noise, but with persistence. Not with the ambition to be everywhere, but with awareness of what you have to give.
Growth is not always visible. Sometimes
it comes in pauses, in rethinking, in the moment when you decide not what to show,
but what more you can create.
For me, the long-term brand is maintained
by several things:
Ø consistency
in vision and values,
Ø
flexibility
in approach,
Ø
and
human connection that is not measured in reactions, but in trust.
And
most importantly – develop yourself. The brand grows with you.
What habits and discipline are needed to build authority?
Discipline is at the core of everything. If you have it – you have direction, sustainability, and the strength to continue even in moments when motivation is on pause.
Authority
is not built from one big step, but from hundreds of small actions that
show that you are a person who can be relied on. Discipline is what
makes authenticity consistent, expertise visible, and words heavy.
The habits
that carry value? To show up prepared, on time, with thought. Not to hide when things get complicated. To remain true to your tone and values,
even when no one is applauding you.
True
authority does not shout, it does not impose, but
simply exists – steadily, honestly, and without the need for explanation.
