I chose what I like, not the "safe path"

Trust in the team is strength, not weakness!
Introduce yourself in a few words..
My name is Virginia Kalcheva and I have the pleasure of working in the hospitality sector, in two wonderful hotels in Sofia – Rosslyn Central Park Hotel Sofia and Rosslyn Thracia Hotel Sofia. I mainly deal with event organization – from business forums and training in the conference center of Central Park to boutique dinners and wine tastings at R Garden & Bar. I believe that I create experiences, not just events.
How would you describe your career in a few words?
Dynamic, inspiring, and full of meaning. A journey that constantly shows me new directions.
What was the most important choice that shaped your path?
My staying in the field of tourism and events, despite all the challenges. I chose to do what brings me joy, instead of the "safer" path.
What would you have liked to know at the beginning of your career that no one told you?
That failures are part of the process. That you should not be afraid of mistakes, but accept them as lessons.
How can one understand which profession is suitable for them?
When you don’t feel how time flies while working. When it brings you pleasure even in busy moments. When at the end of the day you feel satisfied, not drained.
Which skills do you think will be key in the next 10 years?
Adaptability, emotional intelligence, communication skills, and the ability to optimize work processes with technology – even in "human" industries like ours.
How to build a network of useful contacts without appearing interested?
By being authentic. Genuine interest in people, not just their positions. Help first, without waiting for something in return – this is remembered.
What is the biggest mistake you have made in your career, and what did you learn from it?
Sometimes I took on too many commitments at once, and various situations too personally. I learned that not everything should be done individually – trust in the team is strength, not weakness.
How to recognize a toxic work environment and when is it time to leave?
When you feel constantly undervalued, when communication is one-sided and there is no respect. In cases when the workplace starts to harm your personal peace, it’s time to leave, not to judge your surroundings and seek change in them. Clearly, you just don’t fit together.
What would you do differently if you could start over?
Maybe I would trust my intuition more. I wouldn’t change my path, just the way I perceived situations.
How to maintain motivation in times of stagnation?
By changing perspective. Sometimes it’s enough to connect with new people, take on a new type of task, or get inspired by a side project or training.
How to achieve balance between professional and personal life?
By allowing ourselves not to be available 24/7. Balance is not 50/50 every day – sometimes, just knowing when to stop, so you can continue with renewed strength and invest time in personal experiences that recharge you for even more enthusiasm at work.
When is it time to change our career, not just the job?
When even a change in environment does not restore interest and meaning. When you feel that you have changed and your values no longer align with what you are doing.
If you had to give only one piece of advice to people seeking success, what would it be?
Be authentic. People sense true attitude and passion – this will always set you apart.
What is your definition of a "successful career"?
A successful career is one where you leave for work in the morning with a smile, come home in the evening with satisfaction, and do not lose yourself along the way.
