How many leva is it normal to collect from our colleagues for various occasions?

Although the survey seems focused on a specific amount, it actually reveals the culture of belonging and social dynamics within companies!

In the modern workplace, collegiality is often expressed not only in support and goodwill but also in participation in various social initiatives – birthdays, farewell parties, anniversaries, and other occasions that require fundraising. But how “normal” is it to give? Is there a limit to reasonableness?

Here are the results of the survey with the question:

How many leva is it normal to collect from each person in a company for various occasions for colleagues?

  • 5 leva – 10%
  • 10 BGN – 47%
  • 15 BGN – 6%
  • 20 BGN – 28%
  • 20+ BGN – 10%

The obvious winner is the amount of 10 BGN, which almost half of the respondents (47%) define as the most normal and balanced. This figure seems to be a kind of “gold standard,” accepted as sufficient but not burdensome.

How can we analyze the results: balance between generosity and pragmatism!

  1. The dominance of 10 BGN.
Almost half of the respondents stop at the amount of 10 BGN. This shows a consensus – the amount is sufficient not to seem symbolic, but also accessible enough not to create financial pressure. It is likely perceived as part of the unwritten rules in many offices – "this is what everyone gives".
  2. 20 BGN as the second most popular option (28%)
More than a quarter of the participants have no problem giving twice the “standard”. This may signal a culture of stronger engagement, more stable incomes, or a stronger emotional connection with colleagues and the corporate environment.
  3. Polarization: minimalists and generous
An interesting phenomenon is the presence of 10% responding with “5 BGN” and 10% with “20+ BGN” – which indicates a strong division in understandings. For some people, even 5 BGN is sufficient symbolism, while others perceive the collection as an opportunity to express generosity.
  4. Weak presence of “medium” amounts – 15 BGN (6%)
This can be interpreted as a lack of need for an “intermediate” compromise – people either stick to the comfortable and commonly accepted amount (10 BGN), or choose a higher threshold (20 BGN and above) as a manifestation of a more personal commitment.

What conclusion can we draw: it is not just about money

Ten BGN emerge as a convenient “social currency” – a small investment in the spirit of teamwork that maintains a healthy office atmosphere.

Conclusions for companies and managers:

  • The corporate culture matters. Where there is a sense of cohesion, people are more willing to give more.
  • Clear rules alleviate tension. If companies introduce specific guidelines for such cases (e.g. fixed amounts or rotational principles), this reduces social pressure.
  • Participation is important, not the amount. Encourage symbolic participation instead of creating competition over generosity.
