Do not cross the boundary of personal space, be consistent in your image
· Dr. Mariiela Hitova
Life is a matter of perspective, just like any insignificant situation!
Introduce yourself in a few words..
Dr. Mariiela Hitova, managing partner at
EuroDerma clinic in Sofia - focused on clinical dermatology, aesthetic
medicine, laser systems, venereology, and regenerative therapies,
certified for clinical trials and is the only private clinic - base for
training specialists.
How would you describe your career in a few words?
Consistently upward. I started as a
derematologist at the Dispensary for Skin and Venereal Diseases in Veliko Tarnovo,
then continued at the Dispensary in Sofia, where I was also the manager of the
medical facility for nearly ten years. Towards the end, I founded a private clinic
in partnership, where we managed to develop the diversity of dermatology with vision and to work as true collaborators.
It is extremely important for the team to have similar energy, and I am glad that for more
than 10 years my colleagues and I have been together, and the young additions embody the future
of our specialty – smart, curious, persistent, intelligent, and well-mannered.
What was the most important
choice that shaped your path In?
Definitely to leave my
secure prestigious position and to start from the beginning to develop a project,
that would establish itself as a benchmark. But
this confidence was the result of many years of accumulation – comprehensive knowledge
in medicine, a sense of global changes, security in the loyalty of
patients, and support from family.
What would you like to know at the beginning of
your career, but no one told you?
That things do not always depend on us, but that we must
be prepared for them - and they will really happen at the right time.
Patience has never been my strength, but I learned to wait and not to want at
any cost, because sooner or later everything
falls into place and I find that it had to happen that way.
How can a person
understand which profession is suitable for them?
Looking at the young people who come into my office,
I can say that the variety of options confuses them and they often
change, try, are uncertain - perhaps under the influence of social networks and
the enormous information, which is normal. But many are also categorical in their desires.
The profession is felt - you love it,
your relationship overcomes any shocks precisely because you know
why you are together - like with the partner next to you. Different professions imply
different types of psyche, behavior, and attitude,
besides knowledge - that’s why, if there are doubts, and for peace of mind - I
always recommend a professional career consultant.
Which skills according to Inwill be key in the next 10 years?
Adaptability, critical and creative thinking –
analysis, ability for self-improvement, self-management, technological skills–
mastering work with AI, digital
literacy, communication skills - empathy, social sensitivity,
multicultural adaptability.
How to build a network of
useful contacts without appearing interested?
Visit places where people are there for their
own hobbies and interests - concerts, exhibitions, travels, sports.
Talk to them not about work projects, but about
a book or a movie, about your garden, about a new language you are learning. Do not
cross the boundary of personal space, be consistent in your image,
don't annoy, forget aggression in your approach and this will pay off.
What is the biggest
mistake you have made in your career, and what did you learn from it?
I am lucky that I do not have such a moment. I may
have missed a few paths as opportunities, but the one I am on brings me
confidence and peace.
How to recognize
a toxic work environment and when is it time to leave?
Many intrigues, inadequate treatment, contradictory
assessments, lack of joy from work, mental fatigue and tension in the evening -
it's time to put yourself first again and to get out of the routine.
What would you do
differently if you could start over?
I am from the generation that emigrates
professionally to North America, Australia, and South Africa. My colleagues have
succeeded well everywhere. I decided to
stay for various reasons. Should I have gone with them? One of the many
branching paths that life offers everyone - I do not regret,
I have achieved a lot here and have the same opportunities at home, comparing myself to
our various international forums with dermatologists from other countries. We are even
ahead in some sectors.
How to maintain
our motivation in times of stagnation?
Take a break, look at yourself from another angle -
life is a matter of perspective, just like any insignificant situation. You will
see a new chance, I am sure.
How to achieve balance
between professional and personal life?
It is a whole art, especially if you are a woman. At
different moments, different commitments take precedence. Smart people quickly assess
their priorities, adapt, are flexible, learn to politely refuse,
and balance is achieved. Let me not
forget the most important: the right partner, who understands and supports and, of course,
receives the same in return.
When is it time to change
our career, not just the job?
When your ideas cannot be realized in
that place, when the glass ceiling has long been right above your head and there is no other
option – you accept the situation or leave.
If you had to give
only one piece of advice to people seeking success, what would it be?
Know what you want, be prepared for your luck
and smart enough to recognize it when it comes.
What is Inyour definition of a “successful career”?
To experience joy from what I do, to create a successful team and to have the freedom to
make decisions on my own and the strength to refuse.
