Emails, meetings, tasks… but where does life fit in?
· Career Daily News

We often lose something much more valuable than work results. We lose life in its fullness!
Rushed for work – what are we missing while rushing to
another meeting?
Every morning starts in a similar way. The alarm rings, often
earlier than we would like. We get up almost mechanically, preparing in
the rush, our thoughts already racing ahead: emails, meetings, phone
calls, the presentation that needs to be ready. The cup of coffee turns into
fuel, not pleasure.
We live in a rhythm that convinces us that every minute is precious,
because it must be “invested” in the next task. But in this pursuit of
efficiency, in this obsession to always be “online” and always “on time,” we often
lose something much more valuable than work results. We lose life in its
fullness.
The little things we forget
While we rush to get to the office, we miss the moments that
shape us as people. The smile of a child wanting to share a story
from their dream. The greeting of a neighbor passing by. Even the simple beauty
of the morning light that illuminates the window for seconds.
These are small moments at first glance, but they carry
the feeling of meaning and belonging. And when we systematically miss them, when we
replace them with a gaze fixed on the phone or the next task list,
we begin to feel an emptiness that no achievements can fill.
The illusion of urgency
“Everything is urgent.” This is the greatest illusion of modern
professional life. Every email seems important, every meeting – urgent, every
task – a priority. But if we look closely, few of them really are
like that.
The work rhythm creates constant anxiety: fear of falling
behind, of missing out, of disappointing. This anxiety makes us
rush, but it does not bring us closer to what is truly important. Instead of determining what is
meaningful to us, we allow schedules, deadlines, and others' expectations to dictate
our lives.
The cost of constant rushing
When the day is entirely subordinated to the task list,
life becomes reports and checkmarks. Yes, we achieve goals, complete projects,
climb the hierarchy. But what do we lose along the way?
- We lose
our health – with tension, stress, and lack of rest.
- We lose
closeness – because we often say “I don’t have time” to the people we
love the most.
- We lose
connection with ourselves – because instead of listening to what we really want,
we follow others' demands.
Thus, we gradually forget that life is not a project to
be “successfully completed.” It is a process that must be lived.
Stopping as courage
To stop in a world where everyone is running seems like
weakness. But in fact, it is the greatest courage. It takes courage to say “no” to
a meeting that doesn’t matter. To leave the email for tomorrow, to have dinner
calmly with your family. To choose a face-to-face conversation over a conversation in
Zoom.
Stopping brings us back to essence. It allows us to
view life not as an endless race, but as a journey where the most valuable
are the landscapes along the way.
The balance we seek
No one denies the importance of work. It brings us income,
identity, achievements. But when work takes up all the space, and
life remains on the periphery, the question arises: what are we really
rushing for?
Balance is not easily achieved. It requires conscious decisions
– to put down the phone, to say “that’s enough for today,” to give yourself time for
silence. Balance is not a convenience, but a survival strategy – and for happiness.
The hurried daily life is part of modern life, but it should not be our destiny. We can be responsible and successful professionals without losing connection with the little things that give meaning to our days.
The real challenge is to realize that we cannot
bring back the lost moments. We can only decide from today onwards to be
more present, more mindful, slower – and in that slowing down, discover
the fullness of life.
