Without meaning, without work, without direction - the promise of Musk and the fear of skeptics

The future in 5–10 years: between technological utopia and social reality

“Don’t worry about saving money for retirement in 10 or 20 years. It won’t matter. Services will be there to support you.”

With these words, Elon Musk formulates one of the most radical economic predictions of our time - a prediction that questions the very foundations of capitalism, labor, and money. According to him, the world has entered a stage where scarcity disappears, labor loses its value, and technologies will provide abundance that humanity has never known.

But to what extent is this vision inevitable? And to what extent is it shared by other thinkers, economists, and technologists?

1. The end of scarcity: utopia or mathematical illusion?

Musk's vision:

According to Musk, when AI and robots take over almost the entire production process, the cost of labor approaches zero, and along with it - the prices of goods and services. This leads to radical deflation and a world of “universal high supply,” in which pensions and savings lose their meaning.

The opposing viewpoint

Economists like Joseph Stiglitz, Paul Krugman, and Daron Acemoglu challenge this logic. Their argument is that:

• Scarcity is not only technological, but also political, ecological, and institutional

• Even with cheap production, access can be restricted

• Historically, technological progress has not automatically led to fair distribution

Acemoglu emphasizes that AI can increase productivity, but without regulation, this leads to concentration of wealth, not mass prosperity.

2. Will jobs disappear - and for whom first?

Musk: intellectual labor is first

Contrary to popular fear, Musk claims that “white-collar workers” will be affected before physical labor. AI is already replacing programmers, analysts, lawyers, journalists, accountants.

Alternative predictions

• World Economic Forum predicts not an “end of work,” but restructuring

• MIT Work of the Future shows that automation often creates new low-paid roles, rather than freeing people completely

• Erik Brynjolfsson (MIT) claims that AI will be a “co-pilot,” not a full substitute - at least in the next decade

Critics note that the social shock will not be in the lack of work, but in:

• insecurity

• short-term contracts

• loss of professional identity

3. Universal income or universal dependency?

Supporters

Musk, Sam Altman, and Yuval Noah Harari support ideas for:

• universal basic income

• guaranteed access to healthcare and education

They argue that this is the only way to avoid social collapse.

Critics

Economists like Thomas Piketty and Martin Ford warn:

• basic income does not solve the problem of meaning

• can become a tool for social control

• does not compensate for the loss of influence, status, and autonomy

4. Humanoid robots: mass solution or niche technology?

Musk and Optimus

Musk predicts tens of billions of humanoid robots by 2040 that will:

• produce

• heal

• serve

• replace humans almost everywhere

Skeptics

Robotics from Boston Dynamics, Carnegie Mellon, and ETH Zurich are much more cautious:

• physical manipulation is significantly more complex than software

• maintenance, security, and errors have real costs

• the humanoid form is not the most efficient for most tasks

5. Medicine: the end of doctors or a new role?

Musk claims that robots will surpass doctors in 5 years.

The reality according to medical communities

• FDA, EMA, and WHO emphasize that:

  • AI is an excellent assistant

  • but carries risks of errors, biases, and accountability

• Surgery already uses robots, but human control remains mandatory

The more likely scenario:
👉 the doctor becomes a interpreter, ethical filter, and trusted figure, rather than disappearing completely.

6. The great limitation: energy

Here Musk faces less opposition - everyone agrees that:

• AI will require colossal energy resources

• electric grids are not prepared

The disagreement is in the solution:

• Musk: almost entirely solar energy

• Other scientists: a combination of

  • nuclear energy

  • storage

  • local grids

  • efficiency, not just growth

7. The biggest risk is not AI, but the transition

Here opinions almost coincide.

The most dangerous period is not the moment when machines are better than humans, but the intermediate chaos, when:

• old systems are collapsing

• new ones are not yet working

• social tension is rising

This very period - the next 3–10 years - is shaping up to be the most critical.

Conclusion: the future is not one

Elon Musk paints a world of abundance, deflation, and technological magic. His opponents see:

• the risk of inequality

• concentration of power

• loss of meaning and social fabric

The truth will most likely be between the two extremes.

Technologies will not automatically save us, but they cannot be stopped either.
The question is no longer whether the future is coming, but who will have access to it, under what rules, and at what cost.
